Background: Leading up to The Flash 49 (2011-), an anti-Flash task force consisting of the Rouges has been formed to capture the Flash after the destruction of a police station back in issue #47. The Rouges are made up of Captain Cold, Weather Wizard, The Trickster, Mirror Master, and Golden Glider. Barry Allen has been assigned to be the lead forensics scientist for the task force, and now he must figure out how to fake the results of a blood sample taken from the Flash.
Summary: In The Flash 49 we start off by seeing Trickster meeting with a figure sitting behind a desk concealed by the shadows. Not much is revealed about this man, other than the fact that Trickster is a double agent for this man. We then go to a shouting match about the morality of the Flash’s actions, between Barry Allen and the Rouges, sans Trickster. Once the Rouges step out Captain Frye asks Barry about the blood sample taken from the Flash in issue 48. We then go to Wally’s school where we see his hands shaking with the same ferocity as a speedster’s. He is running late for class and ends up summoning his connection to the speed force to get to his seat in class before he’s marked tardy, but in the process he trip on of the speed force detection drones that Captain Frye has commissioned to pinpoint the Flash’s location.
We cut back to Barry Allen having a moment on the wharf with his recently pardoned father. Barry is expressing his doubts about whether or not his actions as the Flash are for the greater good or if he has become an anti-villain in the eyes of the people.By this time the Rouges have made it on site to Wally’s school, causing mayhem in their wake. Since Barry is on the anti-Flash task force he gets the call to rush to the school as well, but he speeds over as the Flash since he knows that there shouldn’t be a disturbance in the speed force at the school. The Flash and the Rouges battle it out, with the fight ultimately ending in the Trickster firing a spurious bomb at Wally which the Flash intercepts. Unbeknownst to him the bomb was actually a restraint system that gets tighter the more you struggle. The final panel the Flash is secured in the restraints and told he is under arrest.
I would highly recommend The Flash 49 because it is the first issue in this new run that shows the origins of Wally’s powers. It is my theory that the only person able to free a speedster, is a speedster which could mean that Wally will become The Kid Flash.
