Post Age of Ultron pre-Civil war the second iteration of the Avengers must take on a scrapyard contraption built out of broken Ultron bodies.
This one shot is a direct lead in into the upcoming movie Captain America: Civil War and features appearances from the Steve Rodgers as Captain America, Black Widow, Sam Wilson, the Scarlett Witch, War Machine, Vision, and Tony Stark.
The comic starts in the New Avengers Training Facility with Black Widow and Captain America sparring. As if sparring with Natasha isn’t enough Steve Rodgers asks her about her psych-evals of the New Avengers. She reveals that some of the team is more suited for combat than others, but that they are an untested force that needs more training together. She thinks that no matter the amount of drills and training no one will know if the new team is ready to take on the next wave of threats to humanity, unless they are field tested.
In the next panel some scientists are constructing ‘Project Ultimo’ out of broken down Ultron sentries. Ultimo makes its way towards a nearby city and the Captain gets a reading that there was an alert in Eastern Europe. As he assembles the new Avengers he makes a call to Tony Stark asking if he wants to tag along, but in typical Tony fashion he’s preoccupied tinkering with his newest tech.
After the team jumps out of the new and improved quinjet (thanks to Tony Stark) they start their assault on Ultimo. After punches are thrown, kick are kicked, and lasers are blasted Ultimo is ultimately defeated, with Scarlett Witch doing most of the heavy lifting (is it still heavy lifting if you are crushing something with telekinesis?).
As part of an epilogue after the adventure Tony reveals his watch that transforms into a hand of the Iron man suit that we saw in the Captain America Civil War trailer.
The version of Captain America – Road To War that I bought has an extra feature “Tales of Suspense #58”, but that’s a review for another day.
All in all you should definitely bag this comic if you even remotely care about continuity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or if you want to read a bonus throwback comic.
